Erg Chigaga vs Merzouga: Which Sahara Desert Experience Is Right for You?

Both Merzouga and Erg Chigaga offer golden dunes and starry nights, but they are very different experiences. One is easier to reach and more developed; the other is wilder, quieter and feels further from the world.

The short answer

Choose Merzouga if it's your first time in the Sahara, you have limited time, or you want easy access from Marrakech or Fes with plenty of options. Choose Erg Chigaga if you want true remoteness, fewer tourists, and a more rugged, off-the-beaten-track desert experience.

Location & Access

Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, near the Algerian border. It's reachable in a long but manageable day by car or transfer from Marrakech or Fes, with well-established routes and plenty of accommodations.

Erg Chigaga lies much further south near M'Hamid El Ghizlane, deep in the desert. Getting here takes longer, often involving off-road driving through rocky plains. The journey itself is part of the adventure, but it requires more time and commitment.

Dunes & Landscape

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is famous for its dramatic, towering dunes that can reach over 150 meters. They're very photogenic and easy to access by camel or 4x4 from nearby camps.

Erg Chigaga's dunes are more spread out, often lower in places but stretch for vast distances with fewer camps in sight. The landscape feels wilder, with more varied terrain including stone plains and acacia trees.

Crowds & Atmosphere

Merzouga is well-developed for tourism. You'll find many camps, restaurants, quad bike operators, and other travelers, especially during peak season. It gets busy, but the low light at sunrise and sunset is what people come for.

Erg Chigaga is significantly quieter. Camps are fewer and more spread apart, giving you a real sense of isolation. If your priority is peace and stargazing without noise, this is usually the better choice.

Which one should you choose?

  • First-time Sahara visitor with 2-3 days: Merzouga
  • Want remoteness and true wilderness: Erg Chigaga
  • Limited time from Marrakech: Merzouga (easier route)
  • Photographing star-filled skies with minimal light pollution: Erg Chigaga
  • Looking for a mix of comfort and accessibility: Merzouga
  • Adventure seekers wanting off-road journey: Erg Chigaga

Our recommendation

For most first-time visitors, Merzouga strikes the right balance of accessibility, comfort, and classic Sahara scenery. For those returning to Morocco or specifically seeking solitude, Erg Chigaga is worth the extra travel time.
