Sahara Camping: Bivouac vs Luxury Desert Camp in Morocco

Sleeping under the Sahara stars can mean a simple blanket on the sand or a king bed in a hand-woven tent. Here's an honest comparison to help you pick the right experience.

Quick comparison

The main difference comes down to comfort, privacy, and price. Both give you dune views and starry skies - the question is how much you want between you and the desert.

  • Bivouac: minimal setup, often just mattresses under the open sky or in basic tents, shared facilities
  • Luxury desert camp: private en-suite tents with proper beds, linens, lighting, hot showers, and often dining tents with full meals

Comfort & Facilities

A traditional bivouac (camel trek overnight) keeps things simple. You'll typically sleep on thick mattresses laid out in a Berber tent or directly under the stars, use shared wash facilities, and eat a simple, home-cooked meal by firelight.

Luxury desert camps are closer to boutique hotels. Expect real beds with crisp linens, private bathrooms (or en-suite), rugs, cushions, lanterns, and multi-course dinners. Some even offer hot showers and charging points.

Atmosphere & Experience

Bivouacs often feel more authentic and intimate. With fewer amenities, you tend to spend more time around the fire, talking with your camel guide, drumming, and soaking in the silence.

Luxury camps still offer Berber hospitality but with more space and privacy. You can enjoy the same sunset camel ride, then retreat to your private tent for the night.

Price range (rough guide)

Prices vary by season, location (Merzouga vs Erg Chigaga), and group size. As a rough guide: bivouacs are more affordable, while luxury camps command a higher price for the added comfort. What matters most is that both can be done well when booked through a reputable operator.

Which one to choose

  • On a tight budget or want a back-to-basics adventure: Bivouac
  • Want comfort without roughing it too much: Luxury desert camp
  • Traveling as a couple wanting privacy: Luxury desert camp
  • Hiking/camel trekking purist wanting minimalism: Bivouac
  • Visiting in colder months (Nov-Feb): Luxury camp (warmer, comfier)
  • Just want the photos and a taste of desert life: Either works well
